Historical Evolution
Vietnam’s passport system has developed alongside the country’s administrative modernization and expanding global mobility.
In the years following reunification in 1975, overseas travel was limited and passports were issued only under tightly controlled circumstances. Early passports were simple documents produced through manual processes. As Vietnam opened its economy and expanded diplomatic and trade ties from the late 1980s onward, international travel increased significantly. Machine-readable passports were gradually introduced to facilitate smoother border procedures.
By the early 21st century, Vietnam began moving toward biometric travel documentation. Biometric e-passports were officially introduced to enhance identity verification and prevent document misuse. In 2022, Vietnam issued a redesigned passport featuring updated security printing and imagery representing national heritage and landscapes. The transition to digital application systems and online public services in the 2020s marked another major step in modernizing passport administration.
